WHAT ARE LASH MITES
Let’s talk about something a little creepy but totally normal: tiny mites living on your eyelashes. Yes, they are real. They are called Demodex, and before you start scrubbing your face in panic, here is the good news. They are actually a natural part of your skin’s ecosystem.
For lash artists and clients alike, the goal is not to eliminate them completely, because that is nearly impossible, but to keep things clean, balanced, and irritation free. So let’s break down what these microscopic roommates are all about and how to keep your lashes looking fresh, fluffy, and healthy.
What Are Eyelash Mites
Eyelash mites, known as Demodex, are microscopic organisms that naturally live on the skin and within hair follicles, especially around the lashes. There are over 60 species of Demodex, but only two commonly live on humans: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis.

Demodex folliculorum is the most common and tends to reside in hair follicles, including the eyelashes, while Demodex brevis lives deeper in the sebaceous (oil) glands. One mite is extremely tiny, measuring at 0.15 mm - 0.4 mm. For reference, it would take several of them to cover a pin head.
While they are common and usually harmless in small numbers, an overgrowth can lead to irritation, itchiness, redness, or conditions like blepharitis (chronic inflammation of the eyelids).
Why It Matters for Lash Artists
For lash professionals, understanding Demodex is key to maintaining client safety and retention. Signs of a possible overgrowth include flaky debris or cylindrical dandruff at the lash line (often called “collarettes”), excessive oiliness, or clients complaining of itchy, irritated eyes.
When lashing:
- Always assess the lash line before starting a service
- Avoid applying extensions on inflamed or unclean lashes
- Educate clients if you notice buildup or signs of imbalance
- Maintain strict hygiene with tools and workspace
In some cases, it’s best to postpone the appointment and recommend proper cleansing or professional care before proceeding.
How Clients Can Keep Lashes Clean
Healthy lash hygiene helps keep Demodex under control:
- Clean lashes daily with a gentle, lash-safe cleanser
- Avoid heavy oils and buildup around the eyes
- Replace eye makeup regularly to prevent bacteria growth
- Brush lashes with a clean spoolie to remove debris
- Stay consistent with aftercare, especially when wearing extensions

Demodex mites are a normal part of our skin ecosystem, but balance is everything. With proper hygiene and awareness, both lash artists and clients can maintain clean, healthy lashes and prevent irritation or lash issues.
