MISTAKES TO AVOID AS A BEGINNER LASH TECH
1. Improper Eye Pad and Tape Placement
Placing eye pads and tape can feel intimidating at first, but proper placement is essential. Pads and tape should sit close to the waterline without touching it, and low enough to fully cover the bottom lashes. Quality eye pads should stick securely to the skin and never slide. Place pads over the bottom lashes to hold them down, then apply tape just below the waterline for extra coverage.
Incorrect placement can cause bottom lashes to stick to top lashes or lead to irritation and red eyes if applied too close. Always adjust the inner and outer corners, check client comfort before starting, and remember, every great set begins with high-quality pads and tape! 2. Skipping Pre-Treatment
Clean lashes are essential for good retention. Natural lashes must be free of dirt, makeup, and oils. Always start your service with a lash bath using a safe foaming lash shampoo and apply primer to ensure maximum retention.
Before your clients come into their appointment, remind them to come in with clean lashes so it’ll be an easy process for you and ensure the best outcome!
3. Improper Isolation
One of the most important steps in lashing is proper isolation, and you'll be doing it nonstop during every set. Over time, it'll become second nature! You can isolate in different ways: using both tweezers, your fingers, tape, or gel pads. Whatever works best for you!
Isolation is crucial because it allows natural lashes to grow and shed properly. If the two lashes are stuck together, one can grow faster than the other, causing pulling, discomfort, and even damage to the follicle. Lash extensions should never hurt.
Lash extensions should always be placed about 0.5-1mm away from the lash line. Too close and they can rub or irritate the skin; too far and they can weigh the lash down, causing twisting. When you're just starting out, it's always safer to place a little farther away than too close.
4. Not Using the Correct Drying Time for Your Adhesive
Choosing the right adhesive drying time is key. You want enough time to isolate and place the lash after dripping it in glue.
Glue that's too fast can cure before you even place it, especially in high humidity. Glue that's too slow can lead to stickies. Aim for a drying time that feels just right for your speed and environment.
5. Using the Wrong Diameter and Length for Their Natural Lashes
Lash extensions come in different diameters and lengths, and choosing the right ones is all about balance. Common diameters include 0.15, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.03; the bigger the number, the thicker the lash. Thinner lashes allow you to create fuller fans, but not too much weight can damage natural lashes.
- 0.03 - Mega volume sets, up to 16 lashes per fan
- 0.05 - Volume sets, up to 8 lashes per fan
- 0.07 - Volume sets, up to 5 lashes per fan
- 0.15 - Classic sets, one extension per natural fan
As a general rule, never use lengths more than 3mm longer than the natural lash to keep them healthy!
6. Choosing the Wrong Mapping for their Eye Shape
The wrong mapping can throw off the entire set, while the right curls and styles enhance your client's natural features. Always consider eye shape and how their natural lashes grow. Popular styles include open eye, doll eye, cat eye, and natural.
Tip: Lash map stickers are a lifesaver for keeping both eyes symmetrical.
7. Not Changing Your Glue Every 15-20 Minutes
Replacing your glue dot every 15-20 minutes is a must for good retention. Lash glue cures as it's exposed to air and humidity, so once it starts looking stringy or goopy, it's time for a fresh drop.
Always shake your glue before dispensing to properly mix the ingredients. If it looks transparent, it wasn't shaken enough. A glue shaker saves time and gives better results. And don't forget to replace your glue bottle every 4-6 weeks!
8. Not Emphasizing the Importance of Aftercare
Lastly, we cannot stress enough how important it is to inform your clients about aftercare. Without the proper care, your beautiful work won’t last as long! Retention is a team effort between you and your client. Remind them to wash their lashes twice a day with a gentle lash shampoo, especially if they wear make up as the dirt and oils can build up on their lash line and cause their lashes to fall off.
Aftercare cards are perfect to give to your client and include in your aftercare kits. It includes all the maintenance needed to keep their lashes looking pretty and intact.
