LASH FANNING TECHNIQUES: HOW TO CREATE PERFECT VOLUME FANS

Creating a perfect fan is one of the most important skills in lashing. The technique you choose can affect retention, symmetry, and overall styling results. Here are a few common lash fanning methods to help you build consistency and control.

Pinching Method

The pinching method involves picking up lashes from the strip and gently pinching the base to form a fan. This technique gives you strong control over symmetry and width, making it ideal for creating full, fluffy volume sets with precision.

For the pinching method, use a slow and gentle pinch near the base of the lashes to help the fan open evenly without twisting or crossing. It also helps to work with a small amount of adhesive, since too much glue can cause the fan to close before placement.

On-Strip Method

The on-strip method involves creating fans directly on the lash strip before picking them up. Using your tweezers, you gently spread and control the lashes at the base while they are still attached to the strip, allowing you to form a fan with more structure and consistency. Once the desired width is achieved, the fan is lifted as one piece. This method is great for improving control, speeding up volume sets, and creating uniform fans with a clean base.

For the on-strip method, make sure the adhesive strip is not too sticky, since lashes need to slide slightly to open into a clean fan. Using consistent pulling pressure and keeping your tweezers angled low against the strip can help create wider, more symmetrical fans with better control.

Flower Bouquet Method

The flower bouquet method works by spreading multiple lightweight lash extensions into a fan before attaching them to a natural lash. The lashes are pinched near the base so they stay connected while the tops open evenly, creating a fluffy, bouquet-like shape. Once the fan is balanced, it is dipped in adhesive and applied for a full, seamless volume look.

Using the correct amount of adhesive is important as too much glue can close the fan, while too little can affect retention.

Handmade vs. Premade Fans

Handmade fans, on the other hand, are created on the spot, allowing for full customization, better control over weight distribution, and more tailored styling for each client.

Premade fans are pre-formed and ready to apply, offering speed, consistency, and efficiency during appointments. If you’re on a time-crunch, but still want your work to be consistent, premades are the way to go!

Each technique has its own strengths, and many lash artists use a combination depending on the client’s desired look and appointment timing. Practicing multiple methods helps you become more versatile and confident behind the tweezers.
