HOW TO PREP YOUR CLIENTS FOR THEIR LASH APPOINTMENT
Steps to Memorize In Order to Have Long Lasting Retention
1. Start with a lash consultation
A lash consultation is the most important part of the appointment. It allows you to understand your client's goals, set realistic expectations, and determine the best mapping for their eye shape, whether almond, hooded, downturned, or otherwise. Even if clients bring inspiration photos, remind them that styles may look different depending on their unique eyes. A thoughtful consultation builds trust and shows clients they're in good hands.
Some clients may not be ideal candidates for extensions. Sparse, thin, or very short lashes may require a recommendation for a lash serum and a return visit in 2-3 months, once their natural lashes are stronger and fuller. During the consultation, assess which curl, length, and weight will suit their lashes while maintaining their natural lash health.
Some Questions To Ask Your Clients Are:
- Have you had any allergic reactions to lash extension glue in the past?
- Do you have any hair-loss conditions?
- Do you have any allergies or sensitive eyes?
- Do you wear glasses or contacts?
- How often do you wear makeup?
- What is your lifestyle like?
- What look are you trying to achieve? Natural or dramatic?
2. Removal all eye makeup
Sometimes clients may still arrive with eyeliner, eyeshadow, or leftover mascara if they didn't have time to remove it beforehand. Always use an oil-free makeup remover to ensure their lashes are completely clean.
3. Perform a lash bath
Giving your client a lash bath with a safe foaming cleanser removes oil, dirt, and residue, creating a clean canvas for extensions.
You'll need a lash shampoo, lip applicator, drip bottle, towel, and fan. Apply one or two pumps of shampoo directly to the natural lashes, then use the lip applicator to gently cleanser the lashes and surrounding eye area. Rinse with water using the drip bottle, tilting the client's head to the side so water runs away from the face. Pay dry with a towel and finish by drying their lashes with a fan.
4. Apply eye pads and tape down their bottom lashes
Apply eye pads correctly and tape down the bottom lashes to prevent them from sticking to the top lashes. Bottom lashes can be tricky, and it’s common, especially for beginners, for a lash extension to accidentally attach.
Adjust the eye pads as needed, cutting them to fit the client’s eye shape. Make sure the pads and tape do not touch the waterline, as this can cause scratching, bruising, or discomfort. Always check in with your client to ensure everything feels comfortable before starting the lash application.
These next 3 steps are optional, but it can significant improve your retention! Wait until the lashes are completely dry between every step and ensure that these products don't touch your client's skin to avoid any irritation.
5. Apply protein remover
Protein remover strips away protein buildup, dirt, oil, and makeup from the natural lashes. We offer both liquid and spray versions in different scents.
Apply a gentle amount to the natural lashes using a microbrush or lip applicator. For the spray version, spray onto the applicator first, then apply to the lashes.
6. Apply primer
Primer removes any remaining dirt, oil, or makeup residue from the natural lashes while balancing their pH. Apply a gentle amount using a microswab or lip applicator. For a little extra indulgence, try our yummy scented primers!
