HOW TO DETERMINE WHETHER LASHES NEED A FILL OR A FULL SET?
The easiest way to determine whether a client needs a lash fill or full set is by evaluating the condition of their current lash set. While most clients return every 2–3 weeks for a fill, everyone's lash cycle looks different. Rather than depending on the calendar, understand and assess what you see on their lash line to determine what your client needs.
What a Lash Fill Should Look Like
A client is typically only needs a lash fill when their extensions still have good overall coverage. Although there will be some gaps from natural shedding, the lash line should still appear relatively full.
You'll usually notice:
- Around 50–60% of the extensions are still intact.
- Small, evenly distributed gaps throughout the lash line.
- A moderate number of outgrown extensions that need to be removed.
- Enough healthy extensions remain to blend seamlessly with new ones.
In these cases, a fill allows you to remove grown-out lashes, replace shed extensions, and restore the set to its original fullness.
What a Full Set Looks Like
A client may need a full set when there isn't enough of the original application left to build from. Even if they booked a fill, the condition of their lashes may indicate that starting fresh will provide a much better result.
Signs your client needs a full set include:
- Less than 30–40% of the original extensions remain.
- Large, uneven gaps across the lash line.
- Numerous outgrown extensions requiring removal.
- The lash set looks sparse, unbalanced, or has lost its original shape.
- So many extensions need to be removed that there isn't a solid foundation left to perform a fill.
At this point, spending time trying to restore the old set often takes as long as applying a new one and typically doesn't produce the same polished result.
Educate Your Clients
Many clients assume they only need a fill because they still have some extensions left. Showing them the amount of retention, pointing out overgrown extensions, and explaining why a fresh set will look better helps them understand your recommendation.
By evaluating the condition of the lash set and not just the time between appointments, you will consistently recommend the right service, protect your client's natural lashes, and deliver the best possible results.
